The 1861 census has been examined and reads as follows: ROBINSON, Saml Wm Head Married M 39 1822 Carpenter Mareham on the Hill, England, York ROBINSON, Ann Wife Married F 42 1819 Thornton, England, ditto ROBINSON, George Son Unmarried M 13 1848 Scholar Langton, England, ditto ROBINSON, Cornelius Son Unmarried M 11 1850 Scholar ditto ROBINSON, Eliza Daughter Unmarried F 9 1852 Scholar ditto -----PAGE BREAK---- ROBINSON, Mary Daughter Unmarried F 7 1854 Langton, England, York ROBINSON, Rosamond Daughter Unmarried F 5 1856 ditto ROBINSON, Toynbee Son Unmarried M 2 1859 Sleaford, England Lincoln GROCER, Henry Lodger Unmarried M 28 1833 Fireman Keston, England Rutland It seems as though the underlined entries have been added into the "Whether Blind or Deaf-and-Dumb" column after the "Where Born" column has been completed as the writing may be in a different pen? Mareham, Thornton, Langton and Sleaford are all Lincolnshire villages which tie in with the individuals concerned so the references to York are all incorrect. |

The 1861 census shows Samuel born at Mareham on the Hill, Yorkshire, England. Mareham on the Hill is a village and civil parish about 2.5 miles (4.0 km) south-east from the town of Horncastle, Lincolnshire. Mareham on the Hill is listed in the 1086 Domesday Book as having one household and 8 acres (0.032 km2) of woodland. The ecclesiastical parish is Mareham on the Hill, part of The Fen and Hill Group of the Deanery of Horncastle.
Samuel seems to have a new wife in the 1881 census.
I think it might be that Ann (ALCOCK) died Q2 1874 in St Pancras age 56, and Samuel remarried to a Mary Ann
who was born circa 1817. Further investigation required.
UPDATE - There is a marrige in Wandsworth in December quarter 1875 between a Samuel William Robinson and a
Mary Ann Kay which might fit the bill? It is more than possible that Mary Ann was married before and KAY was her married name.
