This page contains links to some of the websites I have come across during my research, which I have found particulally helpful, or just plain interesting. I am not including the major "pay to use" sites which we are all familiar with, but those sites which have enabled me to add little bits of background detail or help put names, dates and locations in some sort of context.

Some of these sites are already included as links in individual RiD pages, but those that don't fit with a specific individual(s) are listed here. I hope you find something interesting.

Old Maps
This link will take you to a detailed old Victorian ordnance survey (6 inch to 1 mile : c1888-c1913) of Ipswich, Suffolk, United Kingdom. The beauty of this page is that it contains a "slider" to fade between the old map and a modern day OS overlay. The map can also be zoomed and dragged to other locations. A great way to compare the environment of our ancestors with what we see today.

Find A Will This is a gov.uk website which provides a search facility for UK wills and Grants of Probate from 1858 to date (including Soldiers Wills). Probate information is free to access, and will provide the full name and address of the deceased, the death date and location, the executor of the will the value of the estate. Wills can be ordered for a small fee. You do need to know the deceased's surname and year of death, and a search will generate a page or more of names, but it is relatively easy to navigate.

Locating Londons Past Another London map site! Based upon "a fully GIS compliant version" of John Rocque's 1746 map of London, you can enlarge and scroll this historic map and then replace with London's first O.S. map of 1869-80 or a modern day Google map / satellite image, all linked to exact locations. You can also overlay the maps with data sets (such as parish boundaries), which may help to better understand where your London ancestors lived.
