After completing his National Service, John was employed as a Glazier with James Clark and Eaton Ltd. He worked his way up through the company and was a senior manager when he retired. He worked on a number of projects, including the glazing of the Post Office Tower (now the BT Tower) in central London in 1961. By that time, John and his wife and young son had moved to Braintree in Essex where he was to have more children and spend the rest of his life.
