Census (family) | 1911 (age 75-76) | |
The Hollow Cottages, Northchurch Berkhamsted, Herts Edmund and Mary's grandaughter, Lillian Ethel Cook Abbott (daughter of John and Lydia) age 20 is shown with them at time of census. Edmund's occupation is shown as "Retired Electrician" By 1911, 5 of Edmund and Mary's children had died. |
Edmund and Mary Ann were born and married in Ipswich.
They lived in the town until about 1860 when their forth son Richard was born. They may have then moved to Essex as their next child, Mary, was born in Billericay in 1862, but by 1865 they were living in Bermondsey in Surrey (now part of London).
Sometime between the 1901 and 1911 census's, Edmund and Mary retired to Berkhamstead, Hertfordshire where they appear in the 1911 census. Their daughter, Mary Ann, had been living and working in Northchurch, Berkhamstead as a Parlour Maid since at least 1901, and my guess is that Edmund and Mary retired to the area to be near their unmarried daughter, so she could look after them in their old age?
It is also worh noting that in the 1911 census, Edmund gives his occupation as a "Retired Electrician", but all previous censuses show him as an "Iron Founder".
