Gilbert and Maud are living at the above address in 1939 with Harold and Donald and two closed entries (2 further children still to be identified?), |
A very limited WW1 war record is held on file which shows his mother as his next of kin and that he served in some capacity for 40 days from the 5th September 1914.
From the 1939 Register we can ascertain the Gilbert Hammett was married to a lady called Maud, and from the birth registrations of Harold and Donald, we are told that their mother's maiden name was "Brown". However I was unable to find a marriage registration of a Gilbert Hammett and Maud Brown, The nearest I could get was a marrige of Gilbert Hammett and Maud B Smith in Blything in June quarter 1916.
On searching for a birth of a Maud Smith or Maud Brown in September quarter 1896, I came accross the registration of birth of a Maud Brown Smith in Blything in December quarter 1896 which ticks all the boxes that this is the correct person, but does not really answer the question why Maud used the name Smith for her wedding and Brown on the birth of her children?
