Isabella married Joseph Dwyer in late 1891, about 6 months after the 1891 census. It appears 3 children appeared in fairly quick sucession therafter, but by the time of the 1901 census, almost 10 years after Isabella and Joseph married, Isabella and her 3 children are found living back with her parents, Robert and Mary Ann. Isabella's marital state is shown as "married" but there is no entry for Joseph, and so far I have been unable to find him anywhere else in the country.
In the 1911 census, Isabella is still living in her parent's home, but this time with only two children, Mary Ann and William. There is no sign of her youngest child, Joseph, and although Isabella is still shown as married (20 years) there is still no sign of husband Joseph. Interestingly, the census return shows Isabella has had 4 children, 2 of whom have died so this probably accounts for Joseph (although I am yet to find a definitive death registration for him) plus one other child whose birth and death have yet to be identified.
At the time of the 1939 Register, Isabella is about 58 and still living at 2 Hawkins Road. Her parents are both presumed to have died and she is now the head of the house. The 1939 Register does not state marital status, but husband Joseph is still not to be seen. Isabella is however living with Theresa Aspinall (born 27th August 1911 - about 4 months after the 1911 census) and whose birth was registered without a father's name, but with mothers name of Aspinall. Isabella would have been about 40 years old at that time and it is therefore not impossible to imagine that Isabella is Theresa's mother, hence why they were living under the same roof in 1939. There is also a closed entry on the register which indicates that the individual concerned is still living, so this could be a child of an unmarried Theresa?
There is still much research to be done, and it may be that the facts will never be known, but on face value it seems that after about 10 years of marriage Joseph and Isabella parted, but were never officially divorced. She may have had a 5th child in 1911 and registered her in her maiden name as she was not Joseph Dwyer's daughter, but this is all speculation until all the evidence is in.
