Other Details

Henry was born in (or around) August 1860 in Ipswich. He is shown in the 1861 census as Richard H C Abbott, aged 8 months living with his parents Edmund and Mary Ann. From here on, the Richard part of his name seems to have been dropped.

In early 1885, whilst still living in Ipswich, he married Mary Ann Welling but by 1888 he and Mary Ann had moved to Bermondsey which is where his first child, Florence was born followed by his second daughter, Annie in July 1890. In the 1891 census, the family are shown living at 142 St James Road, Bermondsey, London (with another family of two adults and four children - so quite crowded!).

This was obviously a diffiicult time for Henry. Within a few weeks of the birth of Annie, on the 9th August 1890, Henry was arrested for an alleged stabbing incident. He was charged with "Feloniously wounding JOSEPH LAKEN with the intent to do him grievous bodily harm". He appeared at the Central Criminal Court on the 24th November 1890 but the barrister for the prosection offered no evidence whereupon Henry was found NOT GUILTY. Accordingly, he was acquitted and discharged (see image below).

Henry's occupation is gven at the time of the arrest as "Potman" i.e someone who collects up empty glasses in a pub (which was where the "stabbing" incident started.). In the 1891 census the enumerator's writing is not clear. Henry's occupation could be "Potman" or "Postman"? By the time of the 1901 census Henry's occupation is shown as "Fishmonger".

More bad luck followed. In 1901, Henry and Mary had their last child, Mary Maud, but she only lived for a year and died in 1902.

Henry died in Woolwich in 1919 aged 59. Interestingly, his death is registered in the name of Henry R Cook Abbott.
