Death | Q1 1877 (age 37-38) | Norwich |
James Hunt appears as a widower in the 1881 census and from the birth dates of his and Emma's children, Emma must have died between 1875 and 1881. The most likely death registration is of an Emma Everal Hunt in Norwich in March quarter 1877.Her age is given as 39 (i.e a birth date of about 1838). I have not yet been able to match this to a definitive birth registration |

Somewhat unusually, Alfred and Emma Barr are both recorded in censuses as being born in St Helena in 1841 and 1839 repectively.
St Helena is most famous for the imprisonment of Napolian Bonapart between 1815 and his death in 1821. The British East India Company governed the island between 1821 and 1833 when the East India Act passed control if the Island back to the British Crown.
In 1840, a British naval station was established on the island to suppress the African slave trade and between 1840 and 1849 over 15,000 freed slaves, known as "Liberated Africans", were landed there.
In the 1851 census, Arthur and Emma's father, Peter Barr, shows his occupation as "inkeeper and Cheleas Pensioner", indicating that he had served in the army (or navy?) in his earlier years. He must therefore have served on St Helena sometime between 1837 (when his daughter Harriette was born in Ireland) and 1845 (when daughter Agnes was born in Woolwich)
