I have been unable to identify the definative marriage of Ebenezer Robertson to Mary,
but on FreeBMD I have found a registration of the marriage of Ebenezer John ROBINSON to Mary Bird in Ipswich in
December quarter 1856. This would fit in terms of Ebenezer's age, location and the birth date of his son.
I have examined an online copy of the original register page, which does use the name Robinson, so this is not a FreeBMD transcription error, but may of course be an error on the part of the original registrar? The next step is to check parish records |
By 1862, Ebenezer, aged just 26, was a forman to William Read of Ipswich, a shipbuilder, so it stands to reason that Ebinezer was also a shipbuilder by trade.
When William Read wrote his will in 1862, he left various shipbuilding books, drawings and artifacts to Ebenezer. At some point thereafter, presumably after he retired William Read also loaned Ebinezer money for his own shipyard, as a codicil to William's will dated 7th December 1866 made provision for repayment of the capital and interest after William's death.
William died on the 1st February 1869 and Ebenezer lived until 1913. There was a family connection between William and Ebenezer and more information can be found by examining Williams will on the "LostBrig" website using the link to "lostbrig.net" in the "sources" section below.
There is also a very interesting summary of the shipbuilding industry in Ipswich on the Planet Ipswich web site which can be read by clicking HERE
Some details about this individual have been extracted from a family bible first written
by Ebenezer Robertson (RiD 1853) in 1822, which included information copied from an earlier book dating to 1811.
The transcript was made by Richard Stephen Pinner, a direct descendant of Ebenezer Robertson and
a full copy of of the transcript, together with other information about the Robertson family,
can be found on the website "lostbrig.net" which can be viewed by clicking

My thanks go to both Richard Pinner and lostbrig.net for making this information available.
