RiD No.: | 784 |
Birth | 1888 | Ipswich, Suffolk
The only realistic birth registration for Ethel is in September quarter 1888 in Ipswich. She is registered as Ethel Amelia Abbott (note no Cook)
Census | 1901 (age 13) | 12, Plough Street, Ipswich, Suffolk
At the time of the 1901 census, Ethel was living at 12 Plough Street, Ipswich with her parents and siblings.
Census | 1911 (age 23) | 98, Fore Hamlet, Ipswich, Suffolk
Ethel is shown age 23 as a "Laundress" in the 1911 census. Living with her parents and siblings. See father Arthur for a copy of the census return.
Death | 1963 (age 75) | Ipswich, Suffolk
The death registration of an Ethel A Cooke is registered in Ipswich in March quarter 1963. Her age is shown as 73. This does not quite match with the registered birth date of "our" Ethel in September quarter 1888. From her birth registration, her age in March quarter 1963 would have been 75 years and about 6 months - not 73? |
Spouse | Stanley E COOKE | |
Marriage | December Quarter 1917 | Ipswich |
This marriage registration was between Ethel A C Abbott and Stanley E Cook. This marriage ties in with the death of Ethel A Cooke (see above), but leaves room for some doubt that this is the correct Ethel (see below) |
On face value, this marriage of Ethel and Stanley seems to fit, but the discrepancy over
her age at death worries me. It could be a genuine error at the time of registration, but until I have examined the birth
marriage and death registers, I cannot say catagorically that this is the correct marriage
(hence no link to further research on Stanley as yet).
Further information to hand, but not yet fully explored, is:-
1) There is an entry in the 1939 Register for an Ethel A Cooke living at 52, Long Street, Ipswich, Suffolk, England.
She is shown as a widow age 51 (born Aug 10 1888) and has an occupation as a shop keeper. There is a second
entry which remains closed (indicating the person is still living). The original document
has not yet been examined.
2) There is a probate entry for Ethel Amelia Cooke of 52, Long Street, Ipswich, Suffolk, in 1963 granting
probate to an individual who I believe may be her son.
These facts fully support the marriage of Ethel and Stanley but I would still like to see the marriage
certificate which would definatively confirm that Ethel Amelia Cooke and Ethel Amelia Cook Abbott are one and the same person.
