George BASS (1832- )

RiD No.: 715

Personal Details

Birth 1835/6 Danbury, Essex
There is a baptism of a George Bass on the 2nd December 1832 at St John The Baptist Anglican Church in Danbury, Essex. Fathers name William Bass, mother's name Mary. Although the father's name William fits with the 1841 census below, the mother's names do not match (Mary / Abigale?) and, coupled with the birth year suggested in censuses, this suggests to me that this is not the correct baptism. Further investigation is needed. Note that when Registration was introduced in 1837, Danbury fell into the Chelmsford Registration District.
Census 1841 Stanford Rivers
In the 1841 census , George is shown age 6 living at Brook Cottage in the parish of Stanford Rivers*, with his parents and siblings as follows:-

William Bass age 41, occupation agricultural labourer
Abigale Bass age 38
Wiiliam Bass age 14, occupation agricultural labourer
Ann Bass age 12
George Bass age 6
Eve(?) Sarah Bass age 1

Specific birth locations are not shown, but the enumeration form shows all individuals as "born in this county" i.e.Essex.

Census 1851 Clatterford End
I had some difficulty tracking down the 1851 census for the Bass family, but was eventually able to access both a transcript and a copy of the original return. The transcript is as follows, and I will leave it to you if see if it matches the original which is copied below.

James Bass Head age 51, occupation agrecultural labourer b Essex, Stanford Rivers
Abigale Bass Wife age 48 occupation agricultural labourer wife b Essex, Stanford Rivers
George Bass Son age 15 occupation agricultural labourer b Essex, Stanford Rivers
Thomas Bass Son age 13 occupation agricultural labourer b Essex, Stanford Rivers
Sarah Eve Bass Daughter age 10 b Essex, Stanford Rivers
Wiiliam Bass Son-in-Law age 24, occupation agricultural labourer b Essex, Stanford Rivers
Naomi Bass Daughter age 24 occupation agricultural labourers wife b Essex, ?????well

This census is full of anomolies..

(i) George's father William has become "James".
(ii) A Thomas Bass has appeared who is not in the 1841 census. Where was he?
(iii) George's brother, William Bass appears but he is shown as a Son-in-Law. Should be "Son",enumerator error?
(iv) A Naoimi Bass* appears and is shown as "Daughter". Should be "Daughter-in-Law, enumerator error? (* see 'Other Details' below)

For information, Wikipedia states that "Stanford Rivers is a village and civil parish in the Epping Forest district of Essex, England. The parish, which is approximately 11 miles (18 km) west from the county town of Chelmsford, contains the village of Toot Hill and the hamlet of Little End, both settlements larger than Stanford Rivers village, and the hamlet of Clatterford End. The village is 2.0 miles (3 km) south-east of Chipping Ongar, 3 miles (5 km) south-west of North Weald Bassett and 3 miles north-west of Kelvedon Hatch. The parish covers an area of 1,749 hectares."
You can use the Map Page to view the area surrounding Clatterford End (it's near Chelmsford NE of London!).

With reference to the 1851 census above, William Bass married Naomi Radley in March quarter 1851 in Ongar. Family Search has a transcript of the Parish Register entry in which the marriage date is given as the 1st March 1851, the spouse as William Bass, her father as John Radley and a James Bass as being in attendance (presumably William's brother who was a witness?). The Baptism PR shows Naomi being Christened in Essex (presumably Ongar) on the 5th September 1824 with father John Radley and mother Elizabeth Radley.
